Biography:

Dr. Patten obtained a medical doctorate (MD) from the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Canada) in 1986 and subsequently a specialist certification (FRCPC) in Psychiatry in 1991. He completed a PhD in epidemiology at the University of Calgary in 1994. Currently, he is a Professor in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, with cross-appointments to Community Health Sciences and Psychiatry. His research has focused on the descriptive epidemiology of mood disorders in Canada. As a practicing psychiatrist he is a member of the medical staff at the Peter Lougheed Centre (Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry) and the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary (Mood Disorders Program). His research and clinical work focusses on mood disorders, particularly those co-occurring with other medical conditions.
